Incidents of robbery, theft reported in city

FE REPORT | Thursday, 8 August 2024

Though the prevailing chaotic situation across the country has seemingly eased, law-and-order situation is yet to be restored as a few incidents of robbery and theft were reported from some areas of the city during the last 24 hours.
Residents of Chand Housing Society unitedly resisted a bid of robbery on Tuesday midnight as people of all age groups came out of the flats after knowing about an attack on a house at 1:0 am.
According to locals, a security guard after seeing a band of robbers sweeping a house alerted people by making announcement through the loudspeaker of a local mosque.
Jahanara Farid, a resident of the housing society, told the FE that local people managed to catch some of the robbers and handed them over to army personnel as they reached the spot.
"People got enraged after listening to the news and came out on the streets when they also caught some of the robbers," she told the FE.
As the news quickly spread on the social media, angry residents including students also swept the streets and stood guard at various crossroads.
Receiving the information, an army team conducted a raid in Mohammadpur area around 3am and detained 20-25 members of a juvenile gang.
Another local Sarwat Sultana said under the students' banner, local people have been alerted through miking on Wednesday evening to ensure safety and security of their properties.
As the police administration is yet to take control of the city's law and order situation, these incidents could not be known except from some social media messages.
Meanwhile, President Mohammed Shahabuddin has ordered the police to take control of the law and order situation when newly-appointed Inspector General of Police Md Mainul Islam visited him on Wednesday.
