Inclement weather hits jute output in Rajshahi

Our Correspondent
RAJSHAHI, Sept 9: Although jute was cultivated on more lands than last year, the farmers in the district failed to have a good harvest mainly due to inclement weather.
As farmers made good profit by selling jute last year, this year they brought more lands under jute cultivation in all the upazilas of Rajshahi district.
But the inclement weather became a bane of the jute growers. From the very beginning, the jute plants suffered from a long drought which badly affected their growth.
The farmers told this correspondent that last year they got about 10 maunds of jute per bigha but this year they got only 5-7 maunds.
But farmers who planted their seeds later in the season got a good harvest.
The farmers informed that though the production was not up to expectation this year, they were getting good price for it.
Last year the maximum price was Tk 800 per maund and minimum was Tk 600. But this year jute is being sold at between Tk 650 and Tk 720 per maund.
Although the farmers got a good price of their product, they did not make a good profit because of the high cost of production.
Mohsin, a jute farmer of Sreepur village, told this correspondent that he got nine maunds of jute from a bigha of land last year but this year he got only six maunds because of severe drought.
