Organisations of people with disabilities (PWDs) Monday demanded a 10 per cent allocation of the total national budget. The representatives from the PWDs organizations demanded to fix a specific development goal for the development of the PWDs with a 10 per cent allocation in the budget. "More than 10 per cent people of the country are mentally or physically challenged and for ensuring a secured and normal life of these people, we are demanding 10 per cent out of the national budget," the speakers said. The demands were tabled at a pre-budget discussion regarding the upcoming 20011-12 FY titled 'disabled people in country's development' held at the National Press Club in the city. National Alliance for the Disabled Peoples' Organisations (NADPO) organised the pre-budget discussion. President of the NADPO Md Abdus Sattar Dulal in his keynote speech said above 1.6 million people of the country were physically or mentally challenged. "But only 0.10 per cent was allocated for them in 2010-11 FY. We are demanding a justifiable amount which, we think, is 10 per cent," Dulal said. He noted that a bigger part of the population had remained far away from the mainstream development works of the country. Dulal also said that the PWDs need allocation in development programmes of all the ministries as direct participators. He demanded establishment of braille printing press, language education centre, PWDs'-friendly transportation, shelter in every district for the extreme PWDs and suitable vocational training centre. Vice-president Md. Anowar Hossain Hajari, general secretary Md. Jahangir Alam and joint secretary Md. Iftekher Hossain Sohel of NADPO also spoke on the occasion. NADPO is an alliance of 94 PWDS' organizations throughout the country.
