Increased prices of essentials put poor people in trouble in Tangail

TANGAIL, Feb 23: Prices of essential commodities have gone up in all the kitchen markets of the district, causing immense suffering to middle class, lower middle class and poor people.
The price of rice, different varieties of oil such as, soybean, sunflower and mustard oil, garlic, cardamom, poultry have soared by Tk 10 to 20 per kg, market sources said.
The price of different varieties of rice rose by Tk 10 to 15 per kg, oil price increased by Tk 10 to Tk 20 per litre, imported garlic Tk 120 per kg whereas before few weeks it was being sold at Tk 75 to Tk 80 per kg.
A school teacher Nazmul Hasan under sadar upazila said low income group of people such as landless farmers, rickshaw pullers; day-labourers are suffering a lot. People cannot find out the reason behind the price hike of essential commodities in the present situation.
A rickshawpuller Abdur Rahim said after hike in rice - price in the market "I am in trouble to maintain my family, Some months back rice was sold at Tk 28 to29 per kg, after that it was sold in the local market at Tk 30 to 35 per kg which is now Tk 40 to 45 per kg, but my daily income now is less than the before because of corona pandemic".
Rajab Ali a rice trader of Soyani Bazaar of the town said that suddenly rice price started increasing in the wholesale market. One sack of Minicate and Nazishail varieties weighing 25 kg was sold at 1300 to Tk 1350 respectively some three monts back. At present it is being sold at Tk 1600 to 1650 per bag.
