Indefinite curfew re-imposed after a three-hour respite

Friday, 24 August 2007

FE Report
After a three-hour respite from 4:0pm to 7:0pm Thursday, the indefinite curfew was re-imposed on Dhaka and five other divisional headquarters in the evening.
The government imposed the curfew at 8:0pm Wednesday in all the six divisional headquarters of the country considering the overall situation following Monday's incidents on the Dhaka University campus, an official handout said.
The three-hour relax allowed the stranded people to reach their destinations and city-dwellers to attend urgent business or do some quick shopping.
As a result, a significant number of rickshaws, CNG-run auto rickshaws, passengers' buses and private cars were seen plying on the city streets soon after the curfew was relaxed.
People, especially who remained stranded because of the curfew, came out to the streets for transport to leave for their respective destinations. Mobile-phone networks remained snapped during the three-hour relax.
The government declared Thursday as closed holiday for all government, semi-government and autonomous offices, a Press Information Department (PID) statement said.
Besides banks, financial institutions, educational institutions and business establishments and major shopping centres remained closed in the capital city.
According to another official announcement, all examinations under Bangladesh Public Service Commission have been postponed until August 30.
On Wednesday, the government declared all universities across the country and colleges in divisional towns closed for an indefinite period.
Besides, students were asked to vacate dormitories by 8:00pm Wednesday.
But, despite the curfew many officers and employees of the government, semi-government, autonomous bodies and private offices were seen going to their work places Thursday morning as they were not aware of the government's decision, eyewitnesses said.
Another official announcement said newspaper, news agency, radio and television channel offices and courts have been exempted from the purview of curfew.
Transports, carrying journalists and technicians of newspapers and television channels, have also been exempted from the restriction on movement during the curfew hour, a PID handout said.
It also mentioned that accreditation cards for journalists and technicians issued by Press Information Department (PID) or ID cards from their respective organisations would be considered as curfew passes.
Meanwhile, members of Army, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police were seen patrolling different city streets Thursday to enforce an indefinite curfew to prevent any untoward incident and maintain peace.
Reports from news agencies, however, said the atmosphere under the indefinite curfew was peaceful in the port city Thursday under strict vigilance of the security forces.
The Port Authority, on the other hand, said the internal activities of the port were kept operational from 8pm Wednesday until Thursday noon under special arrangement.
The trouble-torn Dhaka University was clam Thursday as students who had led the protests for three days since Monday left their dormitories Wednesday night in compliance with government orders for closure of universities and colleges and vacating their dorms.
