Wednesday, 31 March 2010

CHITTAGONG, Mar 30 (UNB): An indefinite strike called by a faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) began in Chittagong University (CU) Tuesday protesting an attack of some outsiders on the campus that had left a student wounded.
Organising secretary of CU BCL unit Badrul Alam Bidyut informed the media over phone Monday night about the decision of the strike. Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Choudhury supports the BCL group.
The supporters of Bidyut group halted university-bound shuttle trains, buses and human haulers at about 8:00am protesting the Sunday's incident on the campus in which BCL activist Zahidur Rahman Jewel was wounded.
The joint secretary of rival BCL group of the university, Joynal, who is enjoying support of Awami League leader AZM Nasir, said they were not with the strike decision.
Bidyut also said they would continue their strike until the attackers of Zahid were arrested.
Earlier, on Monday morning, BCL activists halted movement of CU-bound trains and abducted two train drivers protesting the Sunday's incident.
The drivers were set free in the afternoon the same day.
When contacted, CU proctor Dr Chandan Kumar Poddar told the news agency that classes in the university were held. But the presence of the students was thin.
