Dhaka Divisional (North) Transport Owners-Workers Oikya Parishad went on an indefinite strike in 8 districts of Dhaka division (north) on Tuesday to press home their 7-point-demand, including withdrawal of Netrakona deputy commissioner Dr Abul Kalam Azad. The strike began at 6:00am. The districts under the purview of the strike are Netrakona, Sherpur, Jamalpur, Mymensigh, Kishoreganj, Dhaka, Tangail and Gazipur. Due to the strike, road communications between Dhaka and eight districts of greater Mymensingh remained halted, causing immense sufferings to the commuters. Convener of Dhaka Division (North) Transport Owners-Workers’ Oikya Parishad Aminul Haque Shamim announced the strike at a press briefing on Monday afternoon. The other demands include imposing a ban on plying of unregistered vehicles, implementation of the agreement between Owners-Workers Oikya Parishad and government, taking steps to stop extortion on roads and highways and withdrawal of a provision under the Section 302. The parishad convener alleged that Dr Abul Kalam Azad recently ordered Ansar personnel to open fire on the transport owners and workers without any provocation, according to UNB.
