Indefinite transport strike called in Rajshahi
Thursday, 20 March 2014
Transport workers called an indefinite strike in Rajshahi district on Thursday morning protesting imprisonment of their five fellows. A mobile court sent five truck drivers to jail on March 11 awarding them one year’s imprisonment and fining them Tk 30,000 each in Poba upazila of Rajshahi for illegal sand lifting from the Padma River bank. Angered at the penalty, the transport workers of Rajshahi protested the jail term to the truckers and handed over a memorandum to the deputy commissioner of the district in this regard. Later, they met the DC on Wednesday and sought his intervention in the matter. However, the District Transport Workers Union called the strike failing to get any solution. Deputy commissioner Mezbah Uddin Ahmed said the leaders of the transport union have been asked to appeal against the verdict, according to UNB.
