SEOUL, Nov 5 (AFP): An independence hero and a renowned female scholar have been picked to adorn South Korea's new higher- denomination banknotes to be issued in early 2009, the central bank said today.
Kim Koo, who headed the country's interim government in Shanghai while Korea was under Japanese rule from 1910-1945, will have his portrait on the 100,000-won (110 dollar) bills. Kim was assassinated in 1949 after Korea was liberated.
Shin Saim-Dang, a renowned female writer and calligraphist, will be featured on the new 50,000-won bills.
Shin was the mother of Yulgok (1536-84), one of the most respected scholars of the Joseon Dynasty of 1392-1910, and is often held up as a model of Confucian ideals.
