Independent power plants could increase at least 400mw power

Sunday, 29 July 2007

The country could increase power generation by 400 megawatt (mw) hooking captive power generation of Independent Power Plants (IPP) belonging to 100 industrial companies with national power distribution system, reports BSS.
Power generation cell (PGC) sources told the news agency that the government would have to go for buying the power from the IPP that have more capacity to generate power through their own plants than they need.
The government has already signed agreements with numbers of the private industrial plants to have additional 30 megawatt of power from the private power generation plants during the peak hours.
Power cell sources said such initiative could prove very effective before the country could go for establishing full fledged power generation plants which will take considerable time.
Director of Rural Electrification Board (REB) and former director general of PGC, BD Rahmatullah said that the country's power sector should bolster its programme by indigenous local private financial source.
He said the tasks would include energy efficiency and conservation of energy. Rahmatullah said incentive captive power, policy revision and scientific demand side and load side management shall be taken as a short time crash programme to increase power generation.
He said a dedicated autonomous body for renewable and sustainable energy shall be installed immediately. At the same time integration of energy and rural development shall be considered.
All energy expansion will be given for productive use and at the same time regional basis economy zone shall be developed, he said.
He said during the past years the main problem for Power sector was that it was always considered as a toll centre by the political parties for collecting fund for their own against national interest. Corrupt and inefficient people were posted to serve the purpose.
