India ahead of US, China in energy efficiency

NEW DELHI, Apr 22 (PTI): India has emerged as one of the most energy efficient country piping developed economies like the US and China.
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) Director General Ajay Mathur told PTI, "India stands parellel to Japan and germany in terms of engery efficiency and ahead of US, France and China."
"In 2006, India's energy efficiency was 0.15, while France 0.16 , US 0.21 , and China was at 0.22. Energy efficiency is internationally accepted standard," Mathur said citing International Energy Statistics 2008 figures.
India's far-flung areas and some villages are still deprived of power, but when the reach expands maintaining energy efficiency will be a challenge for the country.
Japan and Germany are forerunner in energy efficiency. In 2006 their energy efficiency was 0.15 and 0.15 while the world average was 0.20.
In the next 20 years, India's economic and social development will increase the demand of power to three times. In order to meet the demand energy efficiency is a big challenge ahead, said Mathur.
