India develops new rice varieties

DELHI, May 6: India based Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI), famous for developing 82 new rice varieties during its 64 years of existence has announced that it has successfully developed two new high-yielding varieties of rice that are awaiting the nod from the central committee.
During the last two years, the institute had come out with 11 new varieties, of which five were exclusively suitable for varied ecosystems of Orissa, its Director Mr TK Adhya said while addressing the media.
While varieties like CR Dhan-701, CR Dhan-601, CR Boro Dhan-2, CR Dhan-401 and CR Dhan-501 were released by the Central committee for cultivation in Bihar, Gujarat, Assam, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh, the Orissa State sub-committee has released CR Dhan-801, CR Dhan-401, CR Dhan-402, CR Dhan-403 and CR Dhan-901 for cultivation in Orissa.
