India hands over $10m cheque for flood victims

India Sunday handed over a cheque for US$ 10 million to Bangladesh to assist ongoing flood relief and post-flood rehabilitation programmes, reports UNB.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh earlier mentioned the donation in a letter to Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed.
Indian High Commissioner in Bangladesh Pinak Ranjan Chakraborty handed over the cheque to Adviser for Foreign Affairs Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury at the latter's office in the city Sunday.
Talking to journalists the Indian envoy said the shipment of food grains New Delhi earlier committed will arrive in Bangladesh by the middle of this month. The food grains will include 40,000 tonnes of rice and 10,000 tonnes of wheat.
The foreign adviser thanked the High Commissioner for their good gesture for Bangladeshi people and said bilateral relations between Dhaka and New Delhi is stabilising through various activities of mutual interest.
He expressed the hope that the passenger train service between Joydevpur and Kolkata would start as soon as possible.
The adviser said they will hold bilateral meeting as well as South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) council of ministers meeting in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session beginning on September 24.
