India protest over Modi rally denial

Thursday, 8 May 2014

India's main opposition BJP is holding a protest in Varanasi city after its leader Narendra Modi was denied permission to hold a rally there. Party workers, sporting orange caps with "Modi for PM" slogans inscribed on them, have gathered outside the Benaras Hindu University campus. The Election Commission on Wednesday denied permission for the rally citing security concerns. Mr Modi is contesting the Varanasi seat in the general election. India's election, with 814 million eligible voters, is the world's biggest exercise in democracy and the governing Congress party is battling the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for power. Mr Modi is ahead in all the opinion polls, according to BBC.
