Indian business leaders have showed interest to import more Bangladeshi readymade garments and informed the Bangladesh apparel exporters about the extension of quota free export there, said the acting president of BGMEA Saturday. Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) acting president Siddiqur Rahman told the FE that Indian businesses had expressed their satisfaction over the quality of Bangladesh garments and conveyed their willingness to import greater quantities of the same. Indian businesses made the observation when a 25-member delegation of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) headed by Syamal Gupta, special adviser to Tata International Ltd called on BGMEA leaders on Friday. Mr Rahman said, "The Indian government recently increased the quantity of duty free import of apparel products from 8 million pieces to 10 million pieces. And if Bangladesh wants to export more than this the local manufacturers will have to pay a duty as high as 30 per cent." "We have completed our quota to India last fiscal year and this year we have already covered 47 per cent till March," he said. Indian business leaders informed that they would ease the visa procedure for business people of Bangladesh and provide support to take part in the fair in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, he added. Bangladesh Knitwear Manufactures and Exporters Association's former president Fazlul Haque said, "India has local apparel consumption worth US$30 billion and its yearly growth rate is around 10 per cent. It is a potential market for Bangladesh. The quota free access of 10 million pieces to India is not a big deal."
