Indian agri exports surge by 40 pc in last three years

NEW DELHI, Jan 14 (Commodity Online): India's agri commodities exports witnessed a whopping surge in value terms by 40 per cent in the last three years with high demand for foodgrain, oilmeals, fruits and vegetables from the overseas markets.
According to the a statement released by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, in value terms agri exports surged by 40 per cent to Rs 806.13 billion (80,613.01 crore) in the 2008-09 fiscal, compared with Rs 573.76 billion in the 2006-07 fiscal.
The sale of foodgrain in the overseas market jumped to Rs 150.89 billion from Rs 76.70 billion, while oilmeals shipment rose to Rs 102.69 billion from Rs 55.04 billion.
The statement said that the government has been providing various incentives for infrastructure development, quality control, market development and incentives for promotion, packaging, publicity, information dissemination etc in order to boost exports.
The value of exports of the agricultural products has increased by about 40 per cent during the last 3 years. The major contributors are tobacco, spices and castor oil with gains of 105 per cent, 100 per cent and 95 per cent respectively. There has been a slide in the exports of Pulses and floriculture products though, recording a drop of 30 per cent and 43 per cent respectively.
