Indian \\\'cricket bookie\\\' held at Benapole

A suspected Indian cricket bookie was arrested at Benapole in Sarsa upazila in Jessore on Thursday afternoon. Benapole immigration police OC Md Moniruzzaman said higher authorities in Dhaka had imposed an embargo on Atanu Dutta’s, 40, leaving Bangladesh. There was a ‘red alert’ in the immigration section over the past three days because of the embargo, he said. “We suspect Dutta had entered Bangladesh to bet in the ongoing World T20 World (cricket tournament),” the OC said. Dutta, hailing from West Bengal’s South 24 Pargana district, came to Bangladesh on March 15. He had been staying here illegally after the expiry of his visa on Mar 31. Yesterday. he sent his passport through another person to the Benapole customs for clearance. Police said they detained the man who brought the passport as he was carrying the passport of a “wanted” person. Dutta was later detained from an office at Benapole at around 4pm based on the information given by the detainee, according to bdnews24.com.
