Indian sugar import needs clearance of laboratory test

Import of refined sugar from India will now require clearance of laboratory test.
The government has taken the step in the wake of widespread allegation that the Indian sugar contains hydrose and hydrogen per oxide which are hazardous to health.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR), in a recommendation on November 19 to the commerce ministry, said there is no need of testing raw sugar from India but importing of refined sugar should be tested for checking inroad on contaminated sugar.
Earlier, the ministry had sought NBR views on import of sugar from India.
NBR officials told the UNB that laboratory test revealed that the sugar imported from India contained high dozes of chemicals, which are
hazardous to health.
Experts said Hydrogen per Oxide is usually used as bleaching agent, to fade jeans, in paper pulp plant. Ninety per cent concentrated Hydrogen per Oxide is also used as rocket fuel. It kills tissues of human body that might cause death.
NBR officials said raw sugar coming from India is refined in Bangladesh and certified by the BSTI. So, it does not pose any threat.
According to the business circles, import of raw sugar from India is insignificant. Refined sugar is coming in bulk.
