Indian team visits Bhairab river

JESSORE, Jan 22 (BSS): A five-member Indian delegation, led by member, finance of the IWATA of India, Pradip Kumar, Thursday visited the Bhairab River at Noapara river port to see how to bring back the navigability of the river.

Earlier, a views exchange meeting was held at Noapara Pourasabha auditorium between the delegations of both the countries to discuss the issue.
According to the Jessore Water Development Board, tenders have been invited for dredging and constructing the 30 km long guide wall between the Rupsa and Bhairab rivers at Noapara.
The sources said the dredging would start from February next.
After completion of the dredging, navigability of the river would return which would help increase trade and business, including carrying of fertiliser, cement and other essential commodities in the area.
Besides 5,000 hectares of lands of both side on the river would be brought under irrigation.
Another report from New Delhi adds: The meeting of the Joint River Commission (JRC) would be held before the end of March, Tariq A Karim, Bangladesh High Commissioner to India said Friday.
Speaking at a "meet the press" organised by the Indian Women's Press Corps (IWPC), Mr Karim said that for the last seven years the meeting of the JRC had not taken place.
"Let them (JRC) meet first and let us not pre-judge the outcome of the meeting. If the political leaders want to resolve, it is my firm belief, all issues can be resolved," the high commissioner said.
He said that with two friendly governments now in power, there could not be any problem to resolve any issues.
