Indiana company to make electric vehicles

Monday, 4 August 2008

FORT WAYNE, Ind. Aug 3 (AP): A company that bought a Missouri-based electric vehicle maker two years ago is moving the operation to Fort Wayne.

Jerry Medlin, owner of Electric Vehicles Inc., said Thursday he hopes to begin production by the end of the year. He hopes to add 25 employees to EV's current work force of 12.

In 2006, Electric Vehicles Inc. bought Odessa, Mo.-based Lafayette County Car Company, which makes and sells low-speed electric cars that resemble a cross between a golf cart and a Smart Car.

The vehicles are open on the sides like a golf cart but have features including a windshield, headlights and seat belts that make them street-legal. One drawback is a top speed of 25 mph, which makes the vehicles legal only on streets with speed limits of 35 mph or lower.
