Indians build daunting lead

Monday, 30 July 2007

Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly extended India's lead over England to 140 runs by lunch on day three of the second Test at Trent Bridge, reports BBC.
The tourists were 254-3 after day two, and England took the second new ball after the first over of the day.
But Tendulkar and Ganguly took control as England's bowlers failed to take a wicket during the morning session.
India moved on to 338-3, with Tendulkar unbeaten on 87 and Ganguly 53, having added 92 runs together.
India have never lost a Test match in which they have led by 100 or more on first innings and with plenty of time on their hands, they set out to bat England out of the match, and enjoyed a fruitful morning session.
Having sent down 79 overs Saturday, England were able to take the second new ball after the first over. Ryan Sidebottom soon had the new ball swinging and had an early lbw appeal against Ganguly, but umpire Ian Howell was unmoved - as he was against Tendulkar when the ball was going high.
Ganguly was characteristically strong through the gully region, but did cut loose when he hooked Chris Tremlett for an early six over deep backward square leg.
A wave of excitement swept around Trent Bridge when Sidebottom finally found Tendulkar's edge, but it dropped agonisingly short of Paul Collingwood at second slip.
The Nottinghamshire man was the pick of England's bowlers in the morning session, conceding just seven runs in his nine overs, but failed to make the crucial breakthrough.
Tendulkar brought up the fifty partnership - and extended the lead to the magic 100 mark - when he cracked Anderson through the covers for four, while in the same over, Ganguly also found the boundary to take the score past 300.
Even the introduction of Monty Panesar, an hour and 20 minutes into the day's play, failed to stem the tide as Ganguly gloriously cover-drove for four.
Panesar did hit Tendulkar on the pad as he mistimed a sweep, but it hit the "Little Master" outside the line - and he showed no after-effects as he despatched the next ball for four.
Not afraid to use his feet to the spinner, Tendulkar then swiped Panesar over mid-off for four as England's misery continued.
Ganguly reached his own half-century - his 28th in Tests - as the lead increased and the pair built a superb platform which may allow India to declare later in the day.
