Indians struggle on day one against Bangladesh bowlers

Monday, 18 January 2010

CHITTAGONG, Jan 17 (BSS): Bangladesh bowlers made Indians pay for their superficial remarks as Tigers made the world number one side India into submission on day one as Indians were reeling at 213 for eight thanks to maestro Sachin Tendulkar's unbeaten 76 to save their blushes at the close on the first day of the first Test against Bangladesh at Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium here today.
Indian opener Virender Sehwag yesterday at a press meet termed Bangladesh as an ordinary side raising storm at local media. Skipper Shakib Al Hasan and his boys opted a better method to teach the Indian batsmen a lesson which will probably make them pay more respect in future to their opponents.
If the morning session belonged to Indians then the day certainly belonged to the Tiger bowlers who made Indians wobble in the end after putting on 79 for no loss for the first wicket stand.
Shakib Al Hasan led from the front bowling unchanged 25 overs conceding 48 runs and he was well supported by surprise package Shahadat Hossain, who bowled his heart out and at times look menacing.
Both Shakib and Shahadat shared the eight spoils as Indian batsmen looked vulnerable and simply ordinary when under pressure. A sparse crowd made big celebration with every Indian scalp. The special one was Shahadat's after Dinesh Karthik's wicket - a finger on his lips warning their opponents better watch out next time when you make comment against any opponent.
Well, Virender Sehwag, who had called Bangladesh an "ordinary" side began in a mood to prove his remark with flurry of strokes as Bangladesh bowlers looked helpless in the morning as India had raced to 63 for no loss in 13 overs. To make the matter worse Sehwag cut loose as he slammed Shahadat for three boundaries in one over, reaching his fifty at more than a run-a-ball.
He finally had to pay for impetuous behaviour caught at short cover off Shakib with a rapid 52 off 51 deliveries studded with nine boundaries.
Sehwag's departure triggered Tiger's fight back as Gautam Gambhir (23) trying to be aggressive as Sehwag lashed a wide delivery from Shahadat and the diminutive wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim made no mistake to gobble it.
Rahul Dravid famous for his defense felled to Shahadat's swinging yorker, and the visitors from 79 form loss suddenly were reeling at 85 for 3 in a matter of 17 deliveries.
The rest of the day saw Indians batsmen were fighting to remain afloat as Shakib used all his guiles well supported by Shahadat and co to keep the famed Indian batting line under siege.
Laxman with 12, Yuv Raj Singh also with 12, Dinesh Kartik with duck, Mishra with 14 and Zaheer Khan with 11 all pershished against some disciplined bowling by the local lads.
Every batsman who failed miserably should have taken a lesson from the great Tendulkar, dropped on 16 by Imrul Kayes at wide slip made Bangladesh pay for their folly as he showed his class on way to his 98th half century and also going past 13000 runs in Test cricket.
Before bad light cut India's first innings short it remains to be seen whether Bangladesh bowlers can outwit the master blaster Tendulkar easily or Shakib and co can mop up the remaining tail on day two.
