India's spices exports up 17pc in last 2 months

KOCHI, July 24 (Commodity Online): India's spices exports have risen 17 per cent in volume during April-June 2010 with the nation exporting a total of 148,730 tonnes of spices and spice products valued at Rs 1533.84 cr (US $336.43 mn)
During April-June 2009, the corresponding figures were 127,265 tonnes valued Rs. 1293.14 crores (US$ 275.19 Million) thereby representing 19 per cent increase in value in rupee terms and 22 per cent in dollar terms.
During April-June 2010, the exports of chilli, ginger, celery, fennel, fenugreek, garlic, other spices like tamarind, asafoetida, etc., have shown an increase both in volume and value as compared to April-June 2009. The export of value added products like curry powder and spice oils and oleoresin have also shown an increasing trend. However, in the case of cardamom (small) and turmeric there is an increase in terms of value only. The export of coriander has increased in terms of quantity only. The spices like cardamom (large), cumin, nutmeg & mace, mint products and other seeds has decreased both in volume and value as compared to last year. In the case of pepper export, there is a marginal decrease in both quantity and value as compared to last year.
