India's sugar output likely to increase this season

MUMBAI, Mar 10 (Commodity Online): Uttar Pradesh, India's largest sugar producing state, is expected to produce more than 45,00 billion tonnes of sugar by the end of this season, 12 per cent increase as against previous year, said Cane Commissioner, Sudhir M Bobade.
Sugar cane cultivation was halted for more than a month in UP due to the strike led by sugar cane farmers for wanting more prices for the their produce. The state produced 4.06 million tonnes of sugar in the last year and it is expected touch 4528 billion tonnes by the end of current season that ends in September, said Bobad.
Last season, the government revised the production target several times due to none-availability of cane, from around 6500 billion tonnes projected earlier.
Meanwhile, Indian Sugar Mills Association, president, Vivek Saraogi, said that the country's sugar production this year is likely to be around 16.8 million metric tonnes on the basis of improved production in key producing states such as Utter Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The current estimate of the association is higher than the government's estimate of 16 million tonnes. Earlier in the day, an official of the association said the country's sugar output until February 28 has increased by 8.8 per cent on year to 13.6 million metric tonnes.
