Indictment hearing in graft case against Hasina resumes today

Monday, 31 December 2007

After a four-day recess, the indictment hearing against detained former premier and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina and two others in a Tk 29.9-million extortion case resumes today (Monday) at the relocated Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court, reports UNB.
The case was filed by Azam J Chowdhury, managing director of a power company, against the ex-premier at a time when a purge launched by the Caretaker Government against corruption in high places is underway.
On December 26, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) prosecutor proposed framing charges against the accused in the makeshift court, set up at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban complex.
But the court had to adjourn the hearing, as the defence counsel could not encounter the prosecution proposal without examining some evidences and material records substantiating the charges brought against the accused.
The defence will come up with their submissions for further hearing today after perusal of the evidences brought by the prosecution.
Hasina's sister, Sheikh Rehana, now living in London, and their cousin Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim have also been implicated in the graft case.
