Indigenous fishes face extinction in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, Jul 27: Seasonal indigenous fishes, used to be abundant in the inundated lands under Aman and jute during the rainy season, have decreased drastically.

Indiscriminate use of pesticides in the farmlands in cultivating high yielding crops by the farmers in the last few decades is blamed for this tragic situation.

Sources said if the lethal trend was allowed to be continued, many local varieties of fish would be extinct.

Catching fish in the farmlands during monsoon with the help of bamboo-made fish traps and fishing nets has become a thing of the past.

Local people demanded urgent steps to restrict use of pesticides and other chemicals harmful to the fishes causing the fishes becoming extinct in the region.
