Indo-Pak battle tomorrow

Saturday, 14 February 2015

India will take on Pakistan in their opening encounter of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide tomorrow (Sunday) at 9.30am (BD time). This match of the tournament will be the sixth encounter between the Asian arch-rivals at the World Cup. While odds are heavily staked in favour of the defending champions, Pakistan have been known to bring out their best against the Indians. The match at Adelaide is expected to be the most-watched match in the history of cricket.
With a lot riding on the players from both sides, here are 10 things one needs to know about India vs Pakistan ICC World Cup  match.
1) India has won just 50 out of 126 One-Day Internationals (ODI) played against Pakistan (with four matches ending in No Result). Yet, they are yet to lose a single World Cup match against the arch-rivals. India has registered wins in all the five matches played at the World Cup so far - in 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003 and 2011.
2) Sachin Tendulkar has been a part of all the five World Cup matches played between India and Pakistan, winning the Man of the Match award on three occasions (1992, 2003 and 2011).However, he has never hit a century against them in a World Cup match. His highest score is 98 at Centurion in 2003.
3) Saeed Anwar is the only player to have hit a century in an India-Pakistan World Cup match. His knock of 101 also came at Centurion in 2003. His 126-ball knock included seven boundaries.  Pakistan lost the match by six wickets.
4) Venkatesh Prasad and Wahab Riaz are the only bowlers to have taken a five-wicket haul in an India-Pakistan World Cup match. While Venkatesh Prasad bagged five for 27 at Manchester in 1999, Wahab Riaz achieved the feat at Mohali in 2011. However, Wahab Riaz's effort came in a losing cause.
5) Shahid Afridi has played in three India-Pakistan World Cup matches, most by any player in the two squads that will play at Adelaide. He has scored 34 runs (Ave 11.33) and bagged just one wicket in three matches. His performance has been below par in these high-intensity matches.
6) Younis Khan, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Misbah-ul-Haq and Wahab Riaz are the other players who have previously been part of India-Pakistan World Cup matches. While Younis Khan was a part of the 2003 and 2011 Pakistan sides, the rest featured only in the previous tournament.
7) Sachin Tendulkar has the record of scoring most runs in India-Pakistan ODIs. He has scored 2,474 runs in 66 innings, just ahead of Inzamam-ul-Haq who has 2,403 runs to his credit in 64 innings. Sachin Tendulkar also shares the record of the highest partnership for any wicket in an India-Pakistan clash with Navjot Singh Sidhu. The duo put on 231 runs for the second wicket at Sharjah in 1996. The Little Master also jointly holds the record of most catches in a single innings alongwith Sunil avaskar, Mohammad Azharuddin and Younis Khan - 4 each.
8) India has won 28 out of 69 matches in neutral conditions against Pakistan. Two have ended in No Result with Pakistan registering 39 wins. However, India has lost just one out of six matches in Adelaide to an opposition other than Australia.
9) While Saeed Anwar holds the record of most runs in a single innings by a Pakistani batsman against India, Virat Kohli's 183-run knock at the Asia Cup is the best effort by an Indian batsman against the arch-rivals in ODIs.
10) India last played an ODI against Pakistan at Mirpur in the Asia Cup 2014. They lost the match by one wicket. Mohammad Hafeez was declared the Man of the Match for his all-round effort of 70 runs and two wickets.    — Internet
