Indonesia may impose dumping duties against India

Wednesday, 2 January 2008

NEW DELHI, Jan 1 (PTI): Indonesia's anti-dumping authority has recommended imposition of dumping duties against five countries, including India, for shipping hot rolled coils to that country after complaints by local steel makers.
"Indonesia's Anti Dumping Committee (KADI), in its final report on the anti-dumping investigation against hot rolled coil imports from five countries, has recommended the imposition of dumping duties of up to 56.51 per cent," the Steel Business Briefing (SBB) reported quoting a Jakarta-based industry source.
The report recommends dumping margins against imports from China of 0-42.58 per cent, India 12.95-56.51 per cent, Russia 5.58- 49.47 per cent, Taiwan 0-53.39 per cent and Thailand 7.52-49.61 per cent.
The recommended duties will now be put under the purview of Indonesia's Ministry of Finance for a final determination.
"The minister of finance will make the final decision to implement the recommended duties," it reported and added that an outcome could be expected as early as next month.
Last month, Indonesian news agency Antara reported that Indian steel major Essar may shelve plans to construct a USD 1.9 billion plant in Indonesia following an adverse ruling by the country's anti-dumping authority.
It said PT Essar Indonesia, the local unit of the Indian firm, will postpone construction of the hot rolled coil (HRC) processing plant in the South-East Asian nation.
Confirming the development, a Essar Steel official had told PTI that as a result of the anti-dumping ruling, the company will review its plans for setting up the HRC plant.
KADI has been investigating dumping allegation filed by companies led by state-run steel maker PT Krakatau Steel against Essar Steel Holdings Ltd. and other HRC suppliers from a number of other countries.
