Indoor politics allowed only in capital on limited scale

Tuesday, 11 September 2007

After the withdrawal of ban on indoor politics, political parties are now allowed to hold meetings only in the metropolitan area of the capital on a limited scale with prior permission from the authorities concerned, reports UNB/bdnews24.com.
A gazette notification on relaxation of the restrictions on indoor politics Monday said the political parties should give a 24-hour prior notice to the Metropolitan Police Commissioner about their decision to hold a meeting. Only 50 members of the respective party can attend the meeting.
"For a meeting of more than 50 members, a political party will have to obtain prior permission from the Ministry of Home Affairs 48 hours earlier," says the gazette notification with regard to the relaxation of the relevant section of the Emergency Power Rules 2007.
The meetings should be held indoors at the central office in the metropolitan area of respective political parties or the residence of any member of the particular political party, community centres and hotels or restaurants.
Under the strict guideline for political activity, makeshift arrangements by setting up canopy at open space will not be allowed and none but the party members can take part in the meetings.
The meetings are allowed to discuss only matters relating to the general election as well as to take decisions in this regard. "Other issues cannot be discussed and decided."
Media representatives are allowed in the meetings only for gathering news, not for any live coverage.
"The activities of the meetings cannot be broadcast/telecast live. But, the outcome of the meetings and photographs could be covered as part of regular news," says the government guideline, a follow-up to Chief Adviser (CA) Fakhruddin Ahmed's announcement freeing indoor politics from the moratorium.
Use of sound systems that can make meeting discussions or proceedings audible to common people outside the venue has been prohibited.
For fulfilling the objectives of the notification, these conditions will also be applicable to a small group of any political party.
