Induction furnace in steel making getting popularity
FE Report | Monday, 29 June 2015
Induction furnace in steel making is now getting popularity in Bangladesh thanks to its energy-efficient and well-controllable melting process in comparison with traditional melting, speakers told a seminar on Saturday.
They also said growth of induction furnace is growing fast even in India in recent years.
BSRM, the country's largest rod producer, first introduced it in Bangladesh in 1994. The technology came here in early 1980s.
BSRM organised the seminar on "Quality Construction Steel Making through Induction Furnace" on Saturday at Spectra Convention Centre in the city.
An induction furnace is an electrical furnace in which the heat is applied by induction heating of metal.
The advantage of the induction furnace is that it is a clean, energy-efficient and well-controllable melting process compared to most other means of metal melting.
The seminar focused on the advantages of induction furnace in secondary steel making process for producing quality construction steel with lower power consumption and easier mode of operation.
President of Institution of Engineers Bangladesh Prof Dr M Shamim Z Bosunia was the chief guest at the function.
Bharat Tank, head of business of Electrotherm, India presented a paper on carbon steel making in induction furnaces.
Metallurgical engineer of India Dr Swaren Bedarkar presented another paper on secondary steel processing in ladle refining furnace. Professor at Islamic University of Technology Mohammed Tarek Uddin presented a paper on preliminary study utilisation of steel slag in concrete as coarse aggregate.
Assistant professor at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Dr Fahmida Gulshan presented a paper on secondary steel processing in ladle refining furnace and programme analyst at the UNDP in India SN Srinivas presented another paper on the energy efficiency interventions in induction furnaces.
Many senior engineers of Dhaka city were present at the seminar.
