Inflation records nine-year high

FE Report

The point-to-point inflation recorded nine-year high at 8.28 per cent in April last, mainly due to fuel oil price-led hike in the prices of commodities, official sources said.

The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) that released the inflation data to the Ministry of Finance and the central bank showed that the food-item inflation was at 8.98 per cent in April last.

It calculated inflation of the non-food item at 7.35 per cent for the same month, source added.

Sources pointed out that upward adjustment of petroleum products in February has pushed up the prices of food related items in both urban and rural areas.

Such inflationary pressure on the consumers' price index was seen almost one decade earlier, said a BBS official.

The official feared that inflation might increase further in the coming months.
