The inflow of overseas grant for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) marked a robust 42 per cent rise in the last fiscal as donors pumped increased volumes of fund into various relief and rehabilitation schemes following the November 15 devastating 'Sidr'.

"The foreign donors significantly raised their support through NGOs for the victims of the cyclone Sidr which wreaked the country's southern coastal districts," an official source informed the FE Thursday.

According to an estimate, the super cyclone killed about 3400 people of the south-western coastal districts, and also badly damaged assets and agricultural crops worth nearly $ 1.7 billion.

Referring to official figures, a senior official said both the local and foreign NGOs received external fund worth nearly $ 458.28 million equivalent to Tk 32.08 billion in the last fiscal year (FY).

On the other hand, the total grant amounting to $ 322.61 million or Tk 22.58 billion was available from the overseas donors during the FY 2006-07, the official said.

Official figures also revealed that grant pledged for the NGOs by foreign donors also marked a substantial rise in the last fiscal against the previous year.

Various countries and development agencies pledged nearly $ 576.29 million as grant for the NGOs in the FY 2007-08, which was about 13.60 per cent higher than that of the previous year's volume, the NGO Affairs Bureau statistics revealed.
