Information services for industries

Monday, 7 January 2008

ENTREPRENEURS are facing problems due to the lack of regulatory policies and lack of adequate market information which the government should be enforcing and providing respectively. For instance, there were 10 or 15 vegetable industries in the past set up by local entrepreneurs and these were running viably . Now, there are more than 100 such industries and many are not viable and running at a loss.
Many of the vegetable oil mills have already collapsed putting to uncertainty the repayment of their huge amounts of bank loans. About 50 per cent CI sheet industries have been closed for similar reasons and the same conditions afflict 20 per cent of the cement industries.
Therefore, the government should be careful in giving permission to set up industries that crowd out a sector and cause difficulties to all and add to the list of sick industries.
Before giving permission to a new industry the government's regulatory bodies need to be very careful in assessing whether it will have sound prospects or will die a natural death from being set up in a sector that already has optimum or even excess capacity.
Government's information services in respect of market demand for products, number of industries producing the same product, competition from imported products, etc., should be easily available to intending investors in various industrial enterprises.
