Injured police man dies

The death toll in the deadly crash between a train and a police car in Syedpur has risen to four as one of the injured policemen has died while undergoing treatment. Constable Faruk Hossain, of Barisal’s Babuganj, was posted at Syedpur Police Station. Nilphamari’s Assistant Superintendent of Police (Syedpur circle) ASM Sajedur Rahman said Faruk succumbed to his wounds at the Rangpur Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) on Saturday. Three other severely injured constables had died on Friday night several hours after the Dhaka-bound Nilsagar Express ploughed into the pickup van, in which the policemen were travelling, at an unmanned level-crossing in Syedpur’s Dhelapir.? Assistant SP Sajedur Rahman said a 15-member team of policemen led by Syedpur Police Station OC Ismail Hossain was on its way to Botlagarhi Union to conduct a raid on Friday night. Constable Samsul Islam died on spot when the train hit the rear end of the pickup at the level-crossing on the Dhelapir-Porhar Haat road, he told bdnews24.com. The 10 injured police persons were rushed to Syedpur Hospital at first. They were later transferred to RMCH. Constable Shariful Islam died on the way. Constable Maidul Islam succumbed to his injuries there around midnight while being treated. Four of the injured were sent to Dhaka for better treatment. Nilphamari’s Superintendent of Police Md Jakir Hossain at the hospital told reporters that families of the deceased were given Tk 15,000 each as aid to complete the funerals.
Probe team formed
Bangladesh Railway’s west zone authorities have formed a four-strong committee to probe the incident. The team had been asked to submit their findings within three days, said railway’s Divisional Officer Afzal Hossain. Additional Superintendent of Government Railway Police in Syedpur Dewan Lalon Ahmed said, “It was a very tragic incident. This accident happened as that crossing had no gate and gateman.” There was neither a signal post nor any barrier at the crossing. The car drove into the train’s path as it attempted to cross tracks. Locals said this level-crossing has been unguarded for the past 16 years. Crashes at such crossings in different districts across Bangladesh are frequent, according to bdnews24.com.
