Injured Shakib ruled out of Tigers' final World Cup game

NEW DELHI, Nov 07 (Agencies): Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has been ruled out of his side's last World Cup 2023 match, against Australia in Pune on November 11, with a fractured left index finger.
Later, on Tuesday, Anamul Haque Bijoy, who has playd 45 ODIs, was named as Shakib's replacement in the Bangladesh squad.
Shakib broke his finger while batting in a match overshadowed by Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews becoming the first player in the 146-year history of international cricket to be timed out following an appeal by the Bangladesh skipper which he refused to withdraw.
"Shakib was struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers," said Bangladesh team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan.
"He underwent an emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game which confirmed the fracture. Recovery is estimated at three to four weeks. He will leave for Bangladesh today to begin his rehab." Shakib made 82 in Bangladesh's innings as his team won by three wickets.
After aggregating over 600 runs in the World Cup four years ago, the 36-year-old Shakib had a lukewarm campaign in India, totalling only 186 runs from seven innings at an average of 26.57. Eighty two of those runs came in yesterday's victory, in which he also picked up two wickets to win the Player of the Match award. Shakib was one of the central protagonists of the 'timed out' dramathat unravelled in Delhi on Monday and also raised eyebrows midway through the tournament when he flew home to work on his game with his personal coach.
Meanwhile, Anamul, a seasoned player with 45 ODIs to his credit, has been called up to fill the void left by Shakib's unfortunate sidelining.
The inclusion of a replacement player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee, a step that has now been successfully completed, paving the way for Anamul to join the squad.
Anamul boasts an impressive record, with three centuries and five half-centuries in his 45 ODIs for Bangladesh. He also has registered 18 centuries and 35 half-centuries in List A cricket. His last international appearance was in September of this year against India in Colombo.
Although Anamul was called up, it is highly unlikely that he would find any place in the squad's first XI.
Bangladesh, who have just two wins from eight games, are already eliminated from the race to the semifinals but continue to chase qualification to the 2025 Champions Trophy.
