Injuries plague T20 Women's World Cup players
Friday, 19 June 2026
Uncertainty of playing in the upcoming T20 Women's World Cup looms for several players of Australia, India, Ireland and England over injury concerns.
Australia's Ash Gardner may return to face Netherlands, while Phoebe Litchfield will miss two more matches, reports ICC.
Captain Sophie Molineux has revealed her side will not rush injured pair Ash Gardner and Phoebe Litchfield back from injury at the ICC Women's T20 World Cup.
The duo were notable absentees as the six-time T20 World Cup champions made it two from two at this year's event with an emphatic nine-wicket victory over Bangladesh in Leeds on Wednesday, with the side now travelling down to Southampton ahead of their next fixture against the Netherlands on Saturday.
While Litchfield has already been ruled out of that contest and the Aussies' fixture against Pakistan that follows due to her quad injury, Molineux suggested there was some chance that Gardner could return in time to tackle the Dutch at the Hampshire Bowl.
"Ash is looking good. I think she's getting better every day," Molineux said after the win over Bangladesh.
"It was just a small strain or sprain in her ankle, just a tiny one. So I think she's getting better every day, and we'll assess once we get to Southampton and see what things are looking like for that next game."
India are looking at an injury setback early into their ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign as Shreyanka Patil was carried off the field with a suspected ankle injury.
The star bowler seemed to have rolled her ankle while fielding in the fifth over during India's clash against Netherlands at Headingley on Wednesday.
Concern in the Indian camp as Shreyanka Patil leaves the field after an injury setback at the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026.
She was seen clutching her right ankle in pain and was unable to put any weight on it. After receiving medical treatment on the field, her ankle was strapped and Patil was stretchered off the field.
It remains to be seen how serious the injury is and whether Patil will be back in action for India at the marquee event in England.
Meanwhile, injury forced England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt to sit out multiple group matches of home campaign.
England's home ICC Women's T20 World Cup campaign has taken a blow with the news that captain Nat Sciver-Brunt will miss two more of their group matches.
England keep the momentum rolling as they registered the second win of their campaign by defeating Ireland by 4 wickets.
England management provided an update on the Wednesday afternoon, a day after the host's victory over Ireland.
