Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan on Monday said the government will take legal steps instantly, if any unfit launch operates in the country, reports UNB.
"Launch owners might operate unfit launches beyond the knowledge of the authorities concerned. But, in case of any such information, legal steps will be taken instantly," he said.
The shipping minister made the remark while responding to a starred question from AKM Shahjahan Kamal (Laxmipur-3) in the Jatiyo Sangsad (JS).
He, however, said unfit launches neither operate on river routes nor are allowed to ply.
The shipping minister also said there are 19,143 registered vessels in the country (as of July 14).
Responding to another question from Sukumar Ranjan Ghosh, he said the government procured 11 dredgers over the last five years. Besides, a proposal to procure 20 more is under process of getting the formal approval.
