Integrated efforts to ensure animal welfare underscored

RAJSHAHI, June 20 (BSS): Academics, scientists and researchers unequivocally called for an integrated effort to ensure animal health for betterment of the public health coupled with meeting up the nutritional demands.
All the government, non-government and volunteer organisations concerned should come forward and work together to attain desired yield in this field.
They came up with the observation while addressing a daylong workshop titled "Present Scenario and Future Perspective of Animal Welfare in Bangladesh" at Rajshahi University (RU) on Monday.
International Society for Applied Ethology (ISAE) hosted the workshop in association with the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (VAS) of RU at Senate Bhaban largely attended by teachers, scientists, researchers, students and other stakeholders.
RU Pro-vice-chancellor Prof Chowdhury Jakaria addressed the opening session as the chief guest, while another Pro-vice-chancellor Prof Sultan-U-Islam spoke as special guest with Chairman of the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Prof Ismat Ara Begum in the chair.
Former Member of University Grant Commission Prof Akhter Hossain and Conservator of Forest Dr Mollah Rejaul Karim also spoke.
Dean of the VAS Faculty Prof Jalal Uddin Sarder welcomed the participants, while Associate Prof Dr Jashim Uddin presented a keynote paper on introduction of animal welfare.
They observed that utmost emphasis should be given on creating awareness about animal welfare together with wildlife and the importance of protecting the environment for the sake of survival of all living beings. Existence of wildlife is very important for protecting biodiversity.
Prof Jalal Sarder opined that the wildlife population has been gradually declining due to various reasons including shrinking of their habitat.
That is why time-fitting measures should be adopted.
He said wildlife sanctuaries are very important for protecting the natural world. So, ensuring security to the wildlife has become an urgent need.
