Intensity of cold to rise next week

FE Report | Saturday, 13 December 2014

The country will experience further chilling weather from the next week, and there will be one or two mild cold-waves at the end of the current month.
But the density of fog will disappear within the next two to three days, officials of Dhaka Meteorology Office said.
"There might be a mild or moderate cold-wave across the country after December 17. There will be a number of cold-waves across the country in the last part of the month," a duty officer of Central Storm Warning Centre of Dhaka Met Office told the FE on Friday evening.
The temperature in the capital was 20.7 degrees Celsius, while the lowest temperature was recorded at 10 degrees in Rajshahi on the day.
The official said when the mercury comes down below 10 degrees then it can be termed a cold-wave.
He explained that there are three categories of cold-wave: if the temperature remains between 8 degrees
and 10 degrees then it might be called a mild cold-wave, while 6 to 8 degrees mean moderate cold-wave, and 4 degrees to 6 degrees might be called as severe cold-wave. When the temperature goes down below 4 degrees, it can be termed as very severe cold-wave.
The met official said due to thick fog people of the northern districts are feeling chilling cold.
Meanwhile, following the chilling cold in the capital on Friday, a number of people, irrespective of their social stratum and income, thronged the markets, shopping malls and makeshift shops on the footpaths for buying warm clothes.
The intensity of winter increased suddenly since the first week of December due to thick fog across the country. The poor people are hit hard by the ongoing chilling cold.
The winter season consists of Bengali months of Poush and Magh. The month of Poush will start from Monday.
To assist the winter-hit people the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has allocated fund to district level, so that the local lawmakers can provide warm clothes to the poor people in their respective areas.
