Inter-state cooperation needed to reduce climate change impact
Tuesday, 12 October 2010

Inter-state cooperation is urgently needed for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to mitigate the consequences of climate change as intensity, frequency and devastation of natural calamities have been increasing gradually due to global climate change, reports UNB.
"Bangladesh is located in a disaster-prone zone on the planet…negative impact of climate change on Bangladesh may be beyond imagination and we need inter-state cooperation for humanitarian assistance," State Minister for Environment and Forest Dr Hasan Mahumud said at the inaugural session of a seminar.
Bangladesh Navy arranged the two-day seminar on 'Disaster Management' in cooperation with Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) at a city hotel Monday.
Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral ZU Ahmed and seminar organising committee president Commodore ASMA Baten also addressed the inaugural session.
The state minister said as climate change increases the frequency and intensity of natural calamities, the number of displaced people will be on the rise.
Naval Chief Vice Admiral ZU Ahmed said regional cooperation is needed as a nation alone cannot cope with the disasters. "We need to work together."
He hoped that the participants would come up with pragmatic solution from the two-day seminar.
High level representatives from India, Oman, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Australia, representatives from ministries concerned, Armed Forces Division, Army, Navy, Air Force, BDR, Coast Guard and Bangladesh Ansar were present among others.
Prof Dr MA Rob and Monjurul Alam of the Disaster Management Bureau, Director of Relief and Rehabilitation Centre Nepur Ahmed and Md Monowar Islam from the Department of Environment were present as keynote speakers in the seminar.
