The International Day of Peace will be observed worldwide, including Bangladesh, today (Sunday), said a press release.
Through its resolution 36/67 the UN General Assembly decided that the day would be dedicated to commemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.
Another UNGA resolution 55/282, adopted on September 7, 2001, decided that the Day of Peace would be observed on September 21 each year as a day for global ceasefire and non-violence.
This year, the United Nations launched its global TXT4 PEACE campaign, aimed at collecting messages on peace to be shared with world leaders when they gather in New York for the General Assembly session on September 23.
As part of the campaign UNIC Dhaka launched slogan contest through e-mail where a large number of participants from home and abroad took part. 'Peace we can make, World we can change' was selected as the theme of the day this year for Bangladesh.
In his message on the occasion, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said: "On the International Day of Peace, I call on world leaders and peoples around the world to join forces against conflict, poverty and hunger, and for all human rights for all.''
"Together, let us send a powerful signal for peace that will be read, heard and felt around the world," added Mr Ban.
A poster produced in connection with the observance of the Day inserting Bangladesh slogan- Peace we can make, World we can change - is attached for the use of the press.
