Internet disrupted as connections of 19 IIGs cut

Almost half the country's internet was disrupted on Friday as Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company PLC (BSCPLC) cut connections of 19 IIGs over Tk 2.5 billion.
BSCPLC cut the connection on Friday night," Mirza Kamal Ahmed, Managing Director (Additional Charge), told The Financial Express.
He said they cut connections of 19 IIGs out of 25 partially over dues.
The BSCPLC cut lines after repeatedly asking for dues," he said. They cut the connections on instructions higher authorities.
The BSCPLC is a fiber optic submarine cable telecommunications company and telecommunications service provider (IIG and ISP) based in Bangladesh.
Emerging in July 2008 the company presently handles Bangladesh's two submarine cables as a member of the SEA-ME-WE 4 and SEA-ME-WE 5 international submarine cable consortiums.
SEA-ME-WE4 cable runs a total length of 18,800 km through 17 landing points in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Tunisia, Italy, Algeria and France.
Internet Service Provider Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) president Emdadul Hoque said submarine cable company should not take such an extreme decision without warning.
He said almost 75 per cent of the country's internet connection was down.
An International Internet Gateway (IIG) refers to a system or network that connects a country's internal internet infras.
BSCPLC provides bandwidth to IIGs.
