Intertek opens comprehensive laboratory

Intertek Bangladesh, a UK-based company's local office opened a comprehensive laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art facilities Wednesday.
The company has been working in Bangladesh since 2000 and before newly inaugurated office it was working in its three individual centres in Dhaka.
In the new office all the centres have been merged with expansion of high technology and larger infrastructures.
Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed as chief guest in the programme said, "After visiting the lab I am overwhelmed and always ready to help in maintaining our exportable products quality."
The minister while addressing the programme where British High Commissioner Robert Gibson was present as special guest said, "I will bring foreign apparel related high profile guests to this laboratory to let them know about our testing facilities."
Among others in the inaugural ceremony were Md. Shahidullah Azim, vice president of the BGMEA, Rajesh Saigal, regional managing director of Intertek South Asia, Calvin Yam, senior vice president of Intertek Global Softlines, Evana Fahmida Mohammad, vice president of Phoenix Group and other senior officers of Intertek Bangladesh.
The British high commissioner in Bangladesh in his speech said he hopes the new comprehensive testing lab would help the buyers more in recognising Bangladesh's qualitative garment products.
Currently the lab is mainly testing exportable readymade garments in both woven and knit sectors.
It does have testing facilities to support the growing business volume of the readymade garments industry in South Asia. The Dhaka lab is the largest Softlines testing lab Asia with one stop facilties.
In addition to serving the Softlines industry, the new lab features enhanced capabilities in new streams like tests of footwear, water, ceramics and packaging testing.
Additionally the lab facilitates electrical, food, mineral, agriculture, cargo and GTS testing services and it also offers tactical advantages of calibration, inspection, auditing and training.
Dr. Karthik N.D, director of Softlines and Business Assurance for Bangladesh said the new Intertek facility with about 100 thousands sq ft area will support enhanced testing activities in Dhaka and the lab complements current inspection and auditing services to support the US, EU and other major global export destinations for Softlines.
Rajesh Saigal said the new lab will allow Intertek to provide superior services to local and international consumer goods clients.
