Foreign Minister (FM) AH Mahmood Ali has said Bangladesh has reached the present level of development overcoming various 'odds' and 'challenges', and appreciated the international community's support for the country's development journey, reports UNB.
"We've reached the present level of development against various odds and challenges and have faced global financial uncertainties resolutely," he said mentioning that during this journey the support from the international community, particularly from France, has always been a major strength.
The FM said this while addressing a function on the occasion of French National Day in the city Monday night. France Ambassador in Bangladesh Michel Trinquier also spoke on the occasion.
The FM said in the last four decades since independence, Bangladesh has achieved steady economic growth and accompanied sustained progress in social development.
He said the growing interaction among political leaders, entrepreneurs, scholars and artists from both Bangladesh and France are well-marked. "I'm confident the diversity and depth of our relations will continue to strengthen bringing a tangible outcome and mutual benefit for our two peoples," Mahmood Ali said.
He said the National Day of France is a source of inspiration for freedom-loving people around the world. "France is a great nation; it has great leaders, visionaries, great philosophers, great painters and writers."
The Foreign Minister mentioned that in the initial years following Bangladesh's independence, France provided significant development assistance for the reconstruction of the war-ravaged economy.
"Since then, the multidimensional nature of the bilateral relations has founded a firmer base of friendship between the people of these two countries," he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Michel Trinquier expressed satisfaction over the political stability that Bangladesh regained since the beginning of this year. "Yet a number of crucial issues remained to be addressed for Bangladesh to continue its development as a democratic secular and tolerant state," he added.
