Int'l poultry show begins in city tomorrow
FE Report | Wednesday, 4 March 2009
A three-day poultry show begins in the city tomorrow (Thursday) to create opportunity for the stakeholders to exchange ideas about the most recent technologies developed in the field.
Bangladesh Branch of the World's Poultry Science Association (WPSA-BB) will organise the '6th International Poultry Show and Seminar 2009' at Bangladesh China Friendship Conference Centre from March 5 to 7.
A number of poultry farms, medicine and equipment manufacturers, importers, scientists, specialists and entrepreneurs from both home and abroad will participate in the event.
This was disclosed at a press conference organised by WPSA-BB at the VIP Lounge of National Press Club in the city Tuesday.
Moshiur Rahman, president of WPSA-BB, informed that 171 stalls had been allotted and 37 local and foreign technical papers had been selected for presentation.
"We hope this event will attract visitors and buyers more than the past."
Some 160 stalls were set up and 37 technical papers were presented during the 5th show and seminar. Over 100,000 people visited the event.
Mr Rahman said the main objective of the event was to create opportunity for the poultry farmers, entrepreneurs, scientists, buyers and sellers to exchange views and ideas about the most recent technologies.
Dr. MA Saleque, Secretary of WPSA-BB, told reporters that 50 per cent poultry farms had to be shut down and the industry lost around Tk. 50 billion due to Avian Influenza outbreak in the last two years.
The employment opportunity has come down from 5.5 million in 2006 to 2.5 million in December 2008. The number of commercial farms also shrunk to 70,000 from 150,000 during the same period. Weekly broiler and layer production, daily egg production and annual meat production have substantially come down thanks to the outbreak of avian influenza, Mr Saleque informed.
He said, "Therefore government's timely initiatives are a must to protect this sector."
The organisers also requested the government to fully waive the interest accrued against previous loan for the farmers affected by the outbreak of Avian Influenza last year, reschedule loan at 5 to 6 per cent rate and introduce insurance policy for the medium and large farms.
WPSA-BB has been working as a member of the Holland-based WPSA that has 6500 members in 55 countries around the globe and has been organising this international show and seminar since 1999 every alternate year.
