Intra-party clash leaves 19 BNP men injured

PABNA, Nov 1 (UNB): At least 20 people, including a police official, were injured in a clash between two groups of main opposition BNP in the town today (Sunday).
The police said the clash erupted between the supporters of Habibur Rahman Tota, convener of district BNP, and Kamrul Hasan Mintu, local municipality mayor and former organising secretary of the district BNP, as Mintu's supporters tried to enter into a meeting venue of their rivals.
Mr Rahman was holding a meeting at Doel Centre for forming municipality committee.
But his rival supporters brought out a procession in the town in protest against the meeting.
After their procession, they tried to enter into the meeting venue, which resulted in a clash between the two groups at about 1pm.
During the hour-long clash, both the groups attacked each other with home-made weapons.
Later, the clash spread to different parts of the town that left 20 people injured on both sides.
On information, members of Rapid Actions Battalion (RAB) and police rushed to the spot and lobbed tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mizanur Rahman Mizan of Sadar police circle was also injured slightly during the clash.
Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
