Inventing high yielding varieties of sugarcane urged

Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sharif on Saturday urged agriculture scientists and researchers to invent high yielding varieties of sugarcane to increase its production to make the country self-sufficient in sugar industry. "The country is importing huge quantity of sugar every year to meet the demand of people. So, we have to enhance sugarcane production through developing quality varieties to check sugar import," he told a workshop at the auditorium of Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI) in Pabna, according to a news agency.
