Investing in waste management
Thursday, 27 April 2023
Urban areas in Bangladesh reportedly generate more than 25,000 tons of solid waste every day. However, we still do not have a proper waste management system. It results in an unhealthy environment almost everywhere in the country. We often see piles of waste on the roadsides and footpaths of Dhaka city spreading unbearable stench. People suffer from various air-borne diseases including nasal and respiratory ailments due to their exposure to such waste.
The authorities concerned must take measures immediately to introduce proper waste management system in the country. By investing in infrastructure, implementing proper policies and educating citizens, we can build a cleaner and healthier environment for the residents of Dhaka. Other measures may include projects for the development of public health in the urban areas as well as for environmental health of the city. Those should also include community-based waste management activities, development of sanitary landfill, medical waste incineration and recycling plant and waste-based power plant.
