Investment in rural areas stressed for employment generation

Speakers at a seminar Monday laid emphasis on investment and promotion of entrepreneurship in rural areas of the country to generate employment. They also said non-farm activities in the rural areas have a great contribution in the country's economy and that is why the government should take special care on non-farm activities by giving loans and other facilities. The speakers made these comments at a seminar on "Sustainable Rural Employment Generation: Issues and Future Direction" held in the city under the auspices of Dhaka School of Economics and Bangladesh Economic Association. Civil aviation and tourism minister GM Quader was present as chief guest with former advisor to the caretaker government , Dr A B Mirza Azizul Islam in the chair. Dr Zahurul Karim presented the keynote paper at the seminar. GM Quader said a great number of rural people are leaving the country for overseas jobs as the government is unable to create employment despite its best efforts. The minister said agri tourism is now a big subject for foreign visitors who are fond of observing village scenery. The government has taken a good number of initiatives to create more employment in the rural areas aiming to turn Bangladesh into a middle income country by 2021, the minister said.
