Iodised salt to protect human body from diseases stressed

GAIBANDHA, Aug 13: Speakers at a function here Wednesday stressed on the need for using iodised salt to protect the human body from different types of diseases and reduce child mortality rate as well.
"In Bangladesh, 40 per cent school-age children and 42 per cent pregnant-non lactating women are suffering from iodine deficiency while globally; around 34 million newborns are unprotected from the lifelong consequences of brain damage associated with iodine deficiency", they said.
They came up with the comments while addressing a day long workshop on Prevention of Non-Iodised Salt at the conference room of deputy commissioner (DC) of the town here on Wednesday.
Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC), Gaibandha unit arranged the function under its Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders project funded by UNICEF Bangladesh.
Patit Pabon Baidya, joint secretary and director of BSCIC, addressed the function as the chief guest and regional director of BSCIC Altaf Hossain, civil surgeon (CS) Dr. Nirmalendu Chowdhury, and deputy director of family planning department Dewan Morshed Kamal were present as special guests.
With deputy director of local government section of the DC office M. Mokhlesur Rahman in the chair, the workshop was also addressed, among others, by Sadar UNO Ashraful Momin Khan, district education officer Kutub Uddin, assistant district primary education officer M. Asaduzzaman, district information officer Sabiha Akter Lucky, district marketing investigator M. Moazzem Hossain, and journalist Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman while the welcome speech was delivered by project director Abu Jamil.
